With the explosion of Twitter mobile apps, web-based clients, and desktop applications, it was only a matter of time before someone launched an actual Twitter-focused app store. Oneforty has built a marketplace to for basically all things Twitter, helping developers get their creations found and letting users access a centralized place to find and buy Twitter-based technologies. We have 100 invites to try out the site (OneForty is in private beta); just click here and use the code: TC140.

The site lists 1,332 free and paid applications and services built on Twitter’s API, where people can search for, rate and buy Twitter services. The site also features lists of the most popular apps on the marketplace, ad lists the “best” app for nine types of Twitter services, such as apps for business, url shortners, image sharing, news, and travel. The site also hopes to be somewhat of a social network, with users having the ability to create profiles of their favorite Twitter apps and services.

You sign into oneforty with your Twitter account, which lets you interact with the site with your Twitter handle. Each listing for an app or service has a detailed description of its features and and includes screenshots, and categories that the app fits into (i.e. business or mobile). You can click the “I use this” to add the app to your profile and you will be listed on the app’s page as a user. The listing also identifies the developer who created the app, features press mentions of the site or app or site and pulls in a stream of Tweets that mentions the app or site. And you can “share” a particular app via Twitter.

Oneforty’s revenue model is fairly basic. If you want to download Tweetie’s iPhone app, oneforty provides an link directly to Apple’s App Store, allowing oneforty to collect an affiliate fee. Of course for the free downloads and sites, such as TwitPic or TweetDeck, oneforty will just direct you to their sites, where you can download or access the application. oneforty is also going to list Twitter-related books and merchandise, with affiliate links to Amazon.co. An interesting bit of trivia—the site’s founder, Laura Filton, wrote the “Twitter for Dummies” book and taught a “”Twitter for Business” class at Harvard Business School. Oneforty was incubated at TechStars and is advised by Guy Kawasaki and Brian Solis.

Finton tells me that soon oneforty will become a full fledged e-commerce platform, where developers can sell their apps on the site itself. I think its fairly easy to use and am a fan of its sharing features. If oneforty can pick up a dedicated base of users, it has a chance at becoming the defacto Twitter app store.

The site is in private beta at the moment, but we have

he ability of the web to deliver 3D content is nothing new: people have been finding ways to create 3D within Flash since ActionScript 1.

But in the last year there’s been a sea-change in terms of the richness and proliferation of 3D content on the web. 3D is here to stay, and it’s time that every web designer and developer sat up and took note. So what’s been happening?

The use of Flash for the delivery of visually rich and immersive content only really opened up with the introduction of AS3 and Flash Player 9. AS3 is a much more robust and powerful programming language than its predecessor and the AVM2 (ActionScript Virtual Machine 2) with Flash Player 9 introduced many advantages.

While there were 3D libraries for AS2, it was with AS3 that open source 3D libraries including Papervision3D and Away3D emerged as a way to bring 3D to Flash with relative ease. Sandy has also developed an AS3 Library plus there’s Alternativa, which is free for non-commercial use.

Flash Player 10

With every version release of the Flash Player, a wealth of new features and possibilities is introduced and Flash Player 10 is no exception. Penetration is sitting at around 75 per cent for most markets, so it shouldn’t be long before publishing for Flash Player 10 will become the norm. Here are a few of the exciting new features it offers to 3D developers.

Native 3D: Until now, 3D hasn’t been a native feature of Flash. And while it will in no way replace the open source 3D libraries, it will offer a superior solution in cases where simple 3D is required. There are no cameras, effects, depth sorting, complex objects or 3D model support.

However, because it’s native it’s very fast and lightweight. For designers who just want simple interactive 3D elements, it offers a whole new range of possibilities. Any display object can now be rotated and animated along the x, y or z axis in 3D space via the Flash IDE or ActionScript.

Pixel Bender: The Pixel Bender toolkit is available free from Adobe. It provides a tool to create, compile and export pixel shaders for use in Flash Player 10 and other CS4 products. Taking various forms of input, the pixel shader is run on every pixel of the input source with the simple task of outputting the value of the pixel after calculations have been performed.

PIXEL BENDER: The Pixel Bender toolkit is used to create shaders that can be used within Flash to create filters and effects

It runs at a lower level than ActionScript and runs calculations in parallel, so it has the ability to perform complex tasks at lightning speed. It’s primarily intended for filters and effects and can be animated, so expect to see a fast uptake for its use in transition effects and the like. Developers can share their filters at the Pixel Bender exchange.

There’s also the ability to pass other types of data such as bitmapData, vectors and byteArrays to the shader. This means that experienced users will be able to harness its speed for doing complex calculations for applications like advanced physics simulations, sound processing and number crunching in 3D engines.

Alchemy: Alchemy enables you to compile existing C and C++ code libraries to AS3 as a SWF or SWC to run within FP10 or AIR 1.5. The compiled libraries can then be accessed directly using AS3. This means developers can tap into thousands of open source C and C++ libraries and compile them to be used in their web applications to expand the possibilities of what’s technically possible.

The compiled library will be ideal for tasks that require intensive calculations. Adobe Labs suggest uses such as audio/video transcoding, data manipulation, XML parsing, cryptographic functions or physics simulation. They suggest performance can be considerably faster than trying to achieve the same result using AS3 alone.

Drawing API: With every recent release of Flash there have been modest updates to the drawing API but with Flash 10, the changes are anything but modest. For starters, there’s a much faster and more powerful way to draw lines using the new drawPath method and the introduction of winding.

Triangle drawing methods have been added, primarily aimed at 3D effects but useful for a lot more besides. Significant improvements to bitmap fills when combined with the new triangle provide a powerful means for distorting bitmaps.

And the list goes on, including a set of new graphics data classes that can act as containers for drawing information and can be passed around, used with any target or reused.

Contemplating what the introduction of all these features means makes you think. On the one hand, there’s excitement at the huge increase in potential, all the new toys to play with and the fact that pretty much any visuals that can be conceived can probably now be realised within ActionScript. Yet at the same time there is trepidation in the spiralling complexity of it all.

The sites of the future that define the next era in Flash will demand a superior level of technical understanding to even be conceived. The role of the purely graphical Flash designer may become limited while designers with technical ability begin to shine.

(I-Newswire) – American Cancer Educational Services, a local, not for profit ( 501c3 ) organization, has announced the launch of their new website, www.focusoncancer.org. ACES’ website is a clearinghouse for cancer information and links to reliable websites; it is the webs only information clearinghouse. The non-profit group provides support and education for local and non-local residents who have been diagnosed with cancer.

Launched in 2005, ACES’ function is to remove the hassle of finding good, accurate web resources for cancer and empowering all who visit by providing the necessary tools. Having all been touched by cancer and its effects personally, the founders of ACES, one of whom passed away recently from cancer, use medical experts to screen information and cancer websites on the internet so that they can provide links to only those which provide clear and reliable information. Last year, their website received 40,000 visits; a number that they hope will increase with their new, more easily navigable and aesthetically appealing site.

According to ACES founder Shari Lerer, the new website will help people searching for cancer information in several ways. “We want to help them with the information so the decision making process is easier and the stress level is down.” FocusOnCancer.org is a one stop shop for reliable information that may be difficult to find given the number of cancer sites currently online.

ACES is supported solely through donations from their supporters. Recently, their fundraising division, the American Cancer Fund, finished their yearly fundraising. In 2008, ACES is planning a breakfast and a buffet dinner and auction for local businesses to have the opportunity to support ACES’ efforts in the local community.

The new ACES website was designed free of charge by Galvanek & Wahl Advertising Agency. G&W is a local advertising agency based out of Manville, New Jersey who has done pro-bono work in the past for other non-profit clients including their Summit Marketing Effectiveness award winning work for the Lupus Research Institute.

If you would like any more information on American Cancer Educational Services please visit www.focusoncancer.org or www.americancancerfund.org to make a donation.
This is a web based free Integrated Development Environment or IDE for the PHP language, in other words it is an application that gives developers all the code editing capabilities they need to develop PHP applications online. It includes a real-time syntax code editor with support for all web formats and a powerful FTP editor.

Because it works in a browser you can start coding right away, no need for installing anything and best of all you can work from anywhere, all you need is an internet connection and a web browser and you’re ready to go.

You can develop and maintain multiple projects with ease using PHPanywhere, because as soon as you log in all your projects (FTP servers) are immediately accessible. PHPanywhere even remembers what files you were working on and reopens them as well.

Real-time syntax code editor

The real-time syntax code editor is really what PHPanywhere is all about, so here is a list of just some of the things it does:

Syntax highlighting

Smart indentation for each language

Code folding

Full internationalization

Unlimited undo/redo (now handled on client (browser) side, no more waiting for server response)

Unlimited tabs

Find and replace feature (New Feature)

Displays line numbers (New Feature)

Code auto completion, snippets (New Feature)

Displays line numbers (New Feature)

Code indention (TAB key) (New Feature)

Projects (New Feature)

Create and use projects to group files you commonly use together, so you can easily open them next time you need to work on the project.

File permissions (New Feature)

Change your file and folder permissions using PHPanywhere’s ftp explorer.

Messages Window (New Feature)

Your every action is now logged in the window at bottom of the screen, so you can now easily track changes you made using PHPanywhere.

Skins (New Feature)

Choose from different skins to change the look and feel of PHPanywhere.

Welcome Screen (New Feature)

Besides giving you a nice and warm welcome , it also displays shortcuts to your most common commands, and recently opened files and projects.

Powerfull FTP explorer

This is a full-blown FTP explorer. You can add as many servers as you like, edit files, create/delete files or folders and you can even edit the permissions on folders. It will definitely satisfy all you FTP needs.

Work without restrictions

PHPanywhere doesn’t install anything on your computer, so you can use it without asking your IT administrator for permission. Also since it isn’t on your computer, it works even if your corporate firewall is blocking the FTP port.

Share your work

Because all your projects are on our servers you can easily allow others to work on your project, without duplicating you files. Also PHPanywhere enables real-time document collaboration (**) which makes it the ideal work environment.

PHPanywhere can be comfortably run on Opera 9+ and Gecko-based browsers (Firefox, Camino, Seamonkey,…) on any OS. Support for IE and Safari/Chrome coming soon.

Cloud development platforms, mobile application development and the increasing acceptance of dynamic languages for Web development were among the top 10 stories in the world of software programming. With each passing year, software tools have become more sophisticated. While developers have more languages and tools to choose from than ever before.
1. Cloud development platforms bloom

Google App Engine, Microsoft Windows Azure, Amazon, Salesforce.com and others have entered into the cloud space in force. What must developers do to program to the cloud?

2. Microsoft gets serious about software modeling

Microsoft releases its “Oslo” modeling strategy, joins the Object Modeling Group and pledges support for UML. Microsoft long held an indifferent if not hostile view of the Unified Modeling Language, but has now done an about face and is supporting modeling big time, and supporting UML in the Visual Studio 2010 toolset.

3. Mobile app development gets huge
Resource Library:

Sybase Mobile University Webcast Series: One Hot Summer. One Month of Classes. O
Cloud Computing Infrastructure and the Need for a Service Delivery Platform
Bridging the Value Gap Between IT and Business
Dynamic Infrastructure Worldwide Virtual Forum

Android, Windows Mobile, iPhone, BlackBerry, Symbian, name your platform. Mobile app development is where the action is. The next step is making it easier to build apps that run on more than one platform.

4. Dynamic languages take off

Ruby, PHP, JavaScript, Python, et al, see mainstream use. Ruby is used in all kinds of social networking and Web 2.0 environments, however, taking shots for not being as scalable as some other languages. Meanwhile, PHP, Python and others see their use on the rise in the enterprise.

5. ECMAScript (JavaScript) 4 is tabled

ECMA was on track to release the next major version of the ECMAScript specification, but several members of the core working group looking at the issue said let’s slow down and make things less complicated. ECMAScript is the standards embodiment of JavaScript, which is the lifeblood of browsers. Tabling ECMAScript 4 means companies like Microsoft can have more time to implement new standards into their browsers.

6. Multicore processors put pressure on application developers

With the advent of multicore systems, developers are being forced to write applications that support them. It means developers essentially have to rethink their development strategies and gear up for parallel environments. Companies such as Microsoft, Intel, IBM, Sun and others are looking at the issue.

7. Microsoft/Adobe rivalry heat up

With new versions of Silverlight and WPF, and Adobe Flash, AIR and “Thermo,” Microsoft continues to encroach on Adobe’s turf in the rich Internet application (RIA) space with Silverlight 2 and Windows Presentation Foundation. And into the designer/developer workflow arena with Microsoft Expression. However, Adobe continues to innovate, delivering Flash Player 10, a new version of Adobe AIR and its new “Thermo” design tool. Meanwhile, Sun enters the fray with JavaFX.

8. Planting the seeds of ‘development as a service’

The Basecamp guys, 37 Signals, do a great job, but there’s also Heroku, Bungee Connect and a few others: They’ve all done special cases of development or team collaboration. If someone were to come in and combine them all, it could be a pretty good (and modern) competitor to Visual Studio and WebSphere. It certainly portends a direction the industry should be taking toward hosted rather than on-premises servers.

9. OSGi (Open Services Gateway initiative) makes a big splash

Eclipse, NetBeans, the Spring Framework, Apache and others are looking to OSGi as the future of their Java deployment environments. Others see OSGi not only for deployment but for its programming model, which is starting to encroach on Java EE APIs.

10. The Spring Framework wins converts

Spring has become a leading player in enterprise Java because it helps to simplify development as opposed to Enterprise JavaBeans (EJBs) and J2EE (Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition) or Java EE (Java Enterprise Edition).

Slogans are memorable phrases often used in conjunction with company logos and in advertising campaigns.

They are claimed to be the most effective means of drawing attention to one or more aspects of a product or brand.

But how often do you see “serving you since 1982″ or a similarly canned slogan under a beautifully designed logo? Too often.

In this post, we’ll discuss 5 essential tips on how to write a killer slogan and, if you feel you can’t manage it on your own, where to go to get them written for you.

At the end of these tips, you’ll find a selection of famous slogans as well as an interactive showcase of famous slogans.

The first step is to decide whether or not you need a slogan. If you have a logo, you are already engaged in branding your product or your company.

If you have already taken this step, you really should consider a slogan as well.

Do you want to brand your product or company? That depends on the image that you are trying to project. If you want to attract larger corporate clients, branding is pretty much a necessity.

They will want to see that you are as serious about your product as they are. If you prefer to work with mom and pop shops and want to appear as the helpful guy next door, you may not require this level of branding.

The business model of your company determines your level of branding. If you want to take things to the next level, this is a good starting point.

1. Start From The Logo

If your brand doesn’t have a logo yet, you should get that done first. A slogan works with a logo in order to promote brand identity.

A slogan doesn’t really work without a logo unless your sole advertising medium is radio. The logo is the chicken, the slogan is the egg. If you are designing the logo and producing the slogan for a business, you have a unique opportunity to create both at once, which can allow you to better integrate the two as a final product.

Remember that top brands change their slogans all the time, and you can do the same if you feel you need to five years down the line. No slogan is cast in stone.

2. Give the Project the Time It Needs

You need one hour to research the company that you are doing the slogan for, 1-2 hours to brainstorm ideas after your initial research, and 1-2 hours for client consultation and editing.

If you are drawing up a contract, make sure that you limit the amount of times that you “go back to the drawing board” so that the project doesn’t turn into an endless time suck.

Coming up with a slogan isn’t easy, even for seasoned veterans, and takes at least one working day, so charge accordingly. On the flip side, if you are hiring a slogan writer, there needs to be an element of trust there before you hire them.

You have to trust that they really are going to come up with some great slogan ideas for you to choose from, and you can’t really keep going back and expect them to go through the process indefinitely after paying for an initial session.

If you really don’t like the slogans that they give you, or feel that they misinterpreted your brand’s vision, most slogan writers will want to make it right within limits and these limits will usually be made very clear in your initial contract.

3. Keep It Simple

A logo is only effective if your audience can understand it quickly.

You only have a few seconds to impress, so a slogan like “the best in olfactory widgets since 1949″ isn’t going to do the trick. Simplicity is what you’re aiming for.

Slogans absolutely cannot go over one sentence and five dollar words such as “olfactory” should be avoided. Some rules are made to be broken; if there is a five dollar word that rolls up a few sentences of meaning in one word, go for it.

The one sentence rule, however, should be adhered to at all costs. Simple slogan: Just Do It (Nike). Not simple enough slogan: Selling the Highest Quality Organic & Natural Products (Whole Foods).

4. Make It Funny, If You Can

Where you can bring humor to a slogan, do it.

A great example is Cracked.com’s slogan: “America’s Only Humor & Video Site, Since 1958″. This slogan packs in a few jokes including making fun of the usual “since such a year” slogan and claiming to be the only humour site in America.

There is also a claim about being the only video site, and the fact that they couldn’t have been a website since 1958. All of this in eight words, if you count the “and” symbol.

While they had to make their slogan funny, the same approach to slogan writing of injecting a joke or two is something that you should adopt when appropriate.

If you can’t make it funny without making it lame, just drop the funny and go with your next best options.

5. Stay Honest and Don’t “Trump Up” Your Product

Honesty is important. Can your business actually deliver on the promise that your slogan makes? If not, rethink the slogan.

You’ll also want to stay away from slogans that incorporate language like “the best” or “#1 at what we do” because that kind of language is not only standard and boring, but hard to substantiate even if it is true.

This is a fine line to walk because you still want to present the idea of a quality product without coming off as being too pushy, but a good slogan writer can manage it.

If it seems too intimidating, don’t think of it as writing a slogan, think of it as writing a brand message. What would your product say if it could talk?

Dishonest Slogan: Daz with the blue whitener washes cleanest (Daz) Example from p.186, Advertising as Communication, Gillian Dyer, 1988

Where To Find Slogan Writers

This all depends on what you need them for. If you are a graphic designer that already does logos, you are better off working with a freelance writer.

If you are a business client that needs a logo and slogan, you may want to use an advertising agency or a combination of a graphic designer and a freelance writer, depending on your budget.

To truly get what you want out of either arrangement, come to the agency or writer with a list of your own brainstormed slogan ideas, all of the brochures and websites about your product that you can gather and an open mind for what they can create.

They will likely come up with something completely different, but this will give them an excellent starting point.

Advertising Agency

An advertising agency will generally be very experienced in slogan writing as they deal with brand management on a day-to-day basis.

Agencies do not come cheap, but are well worth the investment in terms of the quality provided for the dollar. Given the cost, mid-sized to large companies will want to consider agencies.

If you have a larger budget, an agency will often be able to arrange market research testing for your slogan and logo that is also well worth the investment.

Freelance Writers

Some freelance writers specialize in slogan writing, but really any freelance writer can manage this task.

You’ll want to look for writers who have experience writing sales letters and promotional copy, as they are more likely to produce the results that you are looking for.

While the experience level may not be the same as a top-level agency, the bill and the more personalized service that you will receive may be more of what you are looking for if you run a smaller business.

If you are looking for a slogan writer, simply post an ad on CraigsList in your area and watch the responses come flooding in.

In-House

This depends. Often sales managers and staff work so closely with the product that they have a hard time looking at it with a fresh eye.

There are also interpersonal factors to consider; if you love the job your sales manager is doing but hate their slogan, you may find yourself in a difficult position.

If you have a marketing writer on staff, they will usually be able to produce good slogans for you. A sales person or manager has a very specific skill set that generally doesn’t extend to creative.

Interactive Examples

Some companies change their slogans very often while others keep their slogans for years. Just how memorable are slogans in general and do they really accomplish what they’re set to do?

Here are 20 examples of well known companies and their slogans. We have purposedly hidden the companies behind these slogans so that you can see if you can figure out which company is connected to which slogan.

To reveal the company behind each slogan, simply roll over the images below:

Famous Slogans

Here are some of the most famous slogans ever created:

Where do you want to go today? – Microsoft

Where’s the beef? - Wendy’s

Between love and madness lies Obsession. – Calvin Klein’s “Obsession”

Plop, plop; fizz, fizz; oh, what a relief it is. – Alka Seltzer

There are some things money can’t buy. For everything else there’s Mastercard. – Mastercard

Sharp Minds, Sharp Products. – Sharp

Do you… Yahoo!? – Yahoo!

Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia. – Wikipedia

Because you’re worth it. – L’Oreal

Be all that you can be. – United States Army

M&Ms melt in your mouth, not in your hand. – M&M candies

Let’s Make Things Better. - Philips

We make money the old-fashioned way….We earn it. – Smith Barney

Everything is easier on a Mac. – Apple Computer

The king of beers. – Budweiser

Welcome to the World Wide Wow – AOL. (play on World Wide Web)

Live in your world, play in ours. - Sony Playstation and Playstation 2 gaming consoles

When it absolutely, positively has to be there overnight. – Federal Express

Push Button Publishing. – Blogger.com

The best a man can get. - Gillette

We’re number two; we try harder. - Avis Rental Cars

Nothin’ says lovin’ like something from the oven. – Pillsbury

Come alive! You’re in the Pepsi generation. – Pepsi Cola

No battery is stronger longer. – Duracell Batteries

Intel inside. – Intel

Summary

A slogan is as necessary to a brand, even an online-only one, as a logo is. If you have one, you should have the other, if only to differentiate yourself from the rest of the crowd that has a logo with no slogan.

Even if you are going to hire someone else to produce it, you should brainstorm a list of options just to make sure that they understand what you believe your own brand message to be.

Keep it simple, try to make it funny, and make sure you aren’t making an inflated claim about your product.
